After the debut, producers wanted NBC to air the show and add it to Saturday mornings line up, but unfortunately NBC thought that the show was just too educational and felt that kids wouldn’t take a liken to the cartoon series. After the refusal to be aired on NBC, they presented Fat Albert to CBS, they came to an agreement and allowed the educational series to air and made its premier in September of 1972, three years after airing on NBC. Over time Fat Albert and his gang gradually faded away becoming a distant memory from our childhood. We will never forget the names of those funny looking characters; I mean, how can you not remember Fat Albert, Mushmouth, Dumb Donald, Weird Harold, Bill, Rudy, Bucky, and MudFoot. Drawing Fat Albert is wicked simple as you can image. All he consists of is a bunch of big over sized circles. This tutorial will show you how to draw one of the biggest looking cartoon characters ever. I know you will have fun, and while you are sketching him out, I guarantee that you will reminisce on your childhood days.
Description: Lets start off this step by drawing guidelines and humongous circle shapes. Starting at the head, draw a regular sized circle for the head, then draw a straight line coming down on an angle for his shoulder and arm combined. Draw another circle which is the smallest to help guide you where to sketch out the shoulders. Move down and draw a huge circle for his huge over sized stomach. from under the stomach draw out two lines for the legs and on the side of the big shape draw a squiggle line for the flab that hangs over his waist.
Description: In this step you will be drawing the guidelines for the face, and outlineing the actual shapes of the legs and lower stomach as shown. Start the outlines for the left and right arm and the the lining for the outside of the chubby face. Remember Fat Albert is a fat cartoon character, so when you are learning how to draw him you have to add alot of wavy lines to define the fat that surrounds his body.
Description: As you can see this step is all about detailing and sketching. Sketch in the eyes which are simply two small circles, then sketch in the shaping of the nose and mouth which happens to be grinning. From under his face you can see where you have to draw his collar for the undershirt that Fat Albert wears. As you can see the guidelines are proving to be very helpful. Detail and define the red sweater by giving the starting appearance of being tucked in. Than sketch out the shapes of his big feet and the roll up effect at the bottom of his jeans.
Description: Here in this step you will be sketching in his little puffy afro, the basketball, and his right hand. His hair is a very simple thing to sketch out and draw, as well as his full looking lips. Move down over to the left side and detail the wrinkles in the shirt near his underarm and booby. Scoot right over to the other side and draw in the hand and the basketball. Before moving down to detail the pants and shoes you have to detail the sweater by adding the collar lines. After you do this then you can detail the belt and wrinkles in the jeans, sneakers and bottom pant leg on the right.
Description: This is the last step, after you perfect your sketch erase all the guidelines that surround the Fat Albert drawing and erase all the sketch marks made by your pencil. After you are done all that is left to do is color his sweater red, his pants blue, his face and hand brown, black hair, and orange ball and you are all set. So hey, hey, hey, I'll see you another day.
