Description: Welcome back gang to another drawing tutorial here on DragoArt.com and this one is going to be a very cool one. I just submitted a lesson on how to draw a Night Elf from the very popular game World of Warcraft. For my second drawing tutorial I will show you how to draw Excalibur or the sword in the stone step by step. As many of you know the Excalibur was a legendary mythical sword of King Arthur and was rumored to be just a fascinating legend. There are actually two very different stories about the whole Excalibur myth. In some stories Excalibur and the Sword in the Stone are told to be the same weapon, but in many tales they are considered to be separate. The Welsh called the sword Caledfwlch and most of the stories of Excalibur originated by the welsh people. The most popular legend that we go by today was originally told by Robert De Boron in his poem called Merlin. The poem tells of a sword set in a stone boulder that processes magical powers. Not only is the sword magical, it can only be removed buy by Arthur, the rightful King of Great Britain. Basically the poem says that only the King of Great Britain can remove the sword from the stone and that King was King Arthur. Another tale that came after the “sword in the stone” was on how Arthur received a sword from the Lady of the Lake after he broke his first weapon during a battle with King Pellinore. The first sword Arthur possessed was called Caliburn, and as the story is told by Sir Thomas Malory, The Lady of the Lake holds up a sword from the water called "Excalibur" which Arthur takes from her hand that rises above the water. The name Excalibur stands for “Cut-Steel”. But whatever happened to Excalibur? Well there is another tale that actually has Arthur lying on his death bed and before he dies he asks a man by the name of Sir Bedivere to return the sword to the lake by throwing it in the water. Now because Bedivere thinks that the magnificent sword is to precise, he lies to Arthur and tells him that he has done as he asked. When Arthur tells him to explain what happened to the sword once it was thrown back into the water, he instantly knew that he was telling lies because Bedivere said that the sword disappeared. When Arthur became terribly upset that he did not do as he asked, Sir Bedivere went to the lake and finally did as his King instructed, throw Excalibur back in the water. But before the sword actually hits the lake, a hand rises from beneath the water and catches the sword and it slowly descends back from where it came. Once the King knew that Excalibur returned to it’s rightful place he passed peacefully. The tales also tell that the three Queens of Avalon say that the great King will one day return to save Britain from a threat once again. All four tales are magnificently told and they have been a part of our history for centuries. The only fact that is real is that there was a King named Arthur and He was a great king indeed. This tutorial will show you how to draw Excalibur or the sword in the stone step by step. Once you are done you will see how beautiful this weapon really is. I will be back again with more drawing fun so stay tuned my fellow artist there is more on the way.
Description: Okay start this first step by drawing out some basic guidelines and shapes that will form a nice frame for the swords layout. Start by drawing a big cross then add a circle at the top for the knob of Excalibur. You will then start to draw the handle shape of the sword and then the actual blade as seen here.
Description: Once that is done you will now start to sketch out the handle of the Excalibur in more precise detail. The right and left sides of the hand guard are shaped like hammer heads. Make sure that they are both identical. Once that is done you can add the guidelines for the engravings that will be drawn out on the butt of the swords blade as shown to you here.
Description: Well you have finally made it to step three and once you are here you will start sketching in the detailing definition lines starting with the knob of Excalibur's handle as seen. All you have to do is make another circle on the inside of the knob shape. Once that is done you can start sketching out the two square shapes on both sides of the swords hand guard. Next sketch in the intricate design definition on the blade and take your time so it comes out nice and neat. Make a pointed tip and proceed onto the next step.
Description: This is the last drawing step and what you will do now is sketch in all the remaining detail on the handle of the sword. This is the engraved circle like shapes to give the sword a good grip. You will then add the detailing lines on the knob and then on the hand guard as shown to you here. Sketch in the rose on the blade above the design you drew in step three and then draw an outline around the design in the shape of a shield. Erase any visible guidelines and shapes that you drew in step one.
Description: Once you are done your Excalibur sword should come out looking like the one you see here. All you have to do now is color it in and add a rock if you wish. You have just learned how to draw Excalibur, Sword in the Stone step by step.
