Description: What is one of the prettiest things that are used by Asian woman when they are either out and about, or when Geisha are entertaining using wit and charm? Their fans. I wanted to do a tutorial on "how to draw a fan" for so long, and it's just recently that I finally got around to doing so. The fan that you will be drawing is actually called a “hand held fan”. These devices where originally created to use as a cooling mechanism that woman and men used primarily on their faces. These contraptions are made from materials like paper and feathers that are cut, or layered out in a circular shape when opened. The Chinese started out using “screen fans” which where made from bamboo. Soon, these hand held devices became increasingly popular throughout Chinese culture playing an important part of the social aspect of their culture. Even though folding fans have been in existence since the 2nd century B.C., it wasn't really until the “Ming Dynasty” that the product started taking off. Soon Japanese adopted the fan and the popularity of these objects grew, and grew until they where called “Mai Ogi” which means dancing fan. Japanese Geisha used the Mai Ogi when they would dance to entertain, or just to mesmerize the crowd. By this time the fan was made of ten sticks, and instead of fine paper, the material was thicker and a lot more durable. Soon Europe started developing their versions of folding fans, and women, more then men used these elegant looking devices which where more commonly used as an accessory then anything else. I drew a simple looking concept, and the great thing is after you're done drawing a fan, you can draw in your own inspirational art to customize it the way you like. Well, this was a fun tutorial description, I hope you guys learned something new with this lesson. I will be back shortly with more drawing fun.
Description: The hand held fan has a crescent shape. In order to draw this design you will need to start with a circle for the middle which will inevitably be the grip of the fan. Next draw the round half moon shape and then add a vertical guideline in the middle.
Description: For your last drawing step all you have to do is finish drawing the ends of the fan, and then draw the bamboo mounting part. You should also draw a decorative smaller fan under the grip as you see here. Erase the lines you don't need, and then move to see what your fan should look like.
Description: Here is your fan, all you have to do now is color it in and add some oriental designs. I hope you had fun, I know you did a great job with this lesson. Join me next time for another fun filled tutorial.
